Lipomas are benign fatty tumors that occur underneath the skin. Most lipomas arise spontaneously without any known cause, making them difficult to prevent before they develop. Treatments include observation with conservative management or surgical excision.
A study performed at the UCLA School of Medicine assessed the utility of deoxycholate injections in the non-surgical management of lipomas. The study concluded that although laboratory investigations showed a decrease in the size of lipomas treated with deoxycholate, further clinical studies were needed to assess long-term safety and efficacy.

Deoxycholate injections, kybella, and phosphatidylcholine injections, although theoretically possible; may not eliminate a lipoma and may in theory cause scarring of the tissue surrounding a lipoma. As such, lipoma treatment may be suboptimal when treated with non-surgical means.
