Removal of Penile Fillers in Los Angeles
The sub specialty practice of penile enlargement has evolved over the last two decades to encompass both surgical options and non-surgical treatments. Some clinicians in the Los Angeles area have advocated for the use of permanent or non-permanent dermal fillers to improve the size of the male genitalia with mixed results. These penile girth fillers can cause longterm problems for men.
Complications from Penis Filler
Complications arising from penis fillers are not uncommon, with patients developing nodularity, lumpiness, abnormal penile girth, and granuloma formation. Combining hyaluronic acid fillers with bio stimulatory fillers may cause granulomas to form and nodules to appear underneath the skin. One of the most difficult-to-treat dermal fillers for penile enhancement includes Bellafill, and other polymethylmethacrylate fillers that can cause permanent discoloration, nodularity, and contour of the male penis.
Our office specializes in the removal of Bellafill and other permanent fillers from the penis. We do not perform penile enhancement procedures, but specialize in the correction of complications arising from penile enhancement surgery. We can remove nodules from Bellafill fillers.

Bellafill nodules in the penis occur after this dermal filler is injected into the soft tissue of the penis. When the collagen spears surrounding the permanent acrylic dissolves, the body may initiate an inflammatory reaction that causes nodules to form around the injected filler.

The most common type of filler that is used in the penis is Hyaluronic acid, and there are many different filler brands that can be used. These include Voluma, Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero injections. In practice, the first step in the management of hyaluronic acid fillers is the administration of an enzyme to dissolve the filler. In many cases, this treatment may require multiple sessions.

Our results stem from two decades of experience treating silicone and other permanent fillers in the soft tissue of the face and body. Penile enhancement procedures using Bellafill, PMMA, and silicone can cause significant nodularity and deformity that requires immediate attention.
Bellafill nodules in the penis occur after this dermal filler is injected into the soft tissue of the penis. When the collagen spheres surrounding the permanent acrylic dissolves, the body may initiate an inflammatory reaction that causes nodules to form around the injected filler. PMMA nodules are similar to silicone granuloma nodules, and may require histologic biopsy to determine the source of the filler.
Dr. Karamanoukian has expertise in the surgical and pharmacologic removal of all types of dermal fillers from the face and body. These fillers may cause acute onset and delayed onset inflammatory reactions that can cause long-term reactions. Although collagen and hyaluronic acid can dissolve over months to years, acrylic PMMA and silicone biopolymers are permanent and rarely dissipate with time. In fact, silicone and PMMA fillers may have worsening reaction as months or years go by.

The best candidates for removal of fillers after botched penile enhancement surgery are those who are experiencing cosmetic or medical complications from the dermal filler. Inflammatory lesions and redness can occur commonly in the penis and scrotum, causing redness and irritation that can compromise penile function and form.

Silicone Biopolymers and Surgery for Removal
Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a double board certified plastic surgeon and an expert in the management of dermal filler complications. Although most patients prefer non-surgical options for treatment, there are many patients who must have surgery to remove painful and inflamed nodules from the soft tissue. Because the skin of the penis is so thin, minor changes in skin inflammation may show through the skin.
