Masseter Botox and Migraine Headaches
This study examined the link between migraine headaches and bruxism associated with masseter hypertrophy in a critical study that monitored patients with this comorbid condition. Centered around the Greek Research Alliance, researchers treated chronic migraine patients who also had problems with bruxism. Masseter hypertrophy was treated with quarterly Botox injections and were assessed using the Bruxscreen-Q questionnaire. Results were documented as follows: 'BoNTA exerted significant improvements in bruxism-related pain, with PI-NRS median scores being significantly reduced from 7 at T0 to 3 at T1 (
p < 0.001). The rates of masseter hypertrophy at T1 significantly dropped, compared to T0 (chi-square: 16;
p < 0.001). Patients also self-reported significant improvements in the Bruxscreen-Q items at T1, compared to T0.'
The conclusions demonstrated beneficial effects toward the reduction of migraine frequency and bruxism pain.
Practical applications of this study affirm the benefits of treating masseter hypertrophy in patients who have both migraine headaches and masseter hypertrophy associated pain. In our Los Angeles office, we treat patients for bruxism with Botox injections into the muscles of around the TMJ. Dr. Karamanoukian is an expert in Masseter Botox in his Los Angeles practice.
