This study from Poland evaluated the upper face muscles with Ultrasound in the context of Botox injections for cosmetic, non medical purposes. Patients aged 21-40 underwent high frequency ultrasound to assess muscle thickness and distance from the epidermis. Although age showed no significant correlation with muscle depth or thickness, BMI was associated with these variations. The research conclusions provide normative ultrasound parameters for upper facial muscles in healthy adults.
Practically, this study substantiates that there are anatomic differences in muscle depth and thickness, but these are not age-related changes. Individual muscle differences can be assessed with ultrasound. In practice, ultrasound is not a suitable complement to injections provided the injector uses clinical observation and experience. In our Los Angeles plastic surgery practice, we rarely use ultrasound in conjunction with Botox injections; but use biometric and dynamic indicators to gauge depth and muscle tone over form.
