Silicone Breast Implant Rupture and Silicone Disease

This case presentation discusses a 65 year old female who presented to the hospital with an abnormal x-ray of the lungs found on a routine medical check-up. She had a history of silicone breast implants at 22 years old which were removed 3 years prior. The chest x-ray demonstrated small bilateral nodular shadows in the middle and lower lung fields - with CT showing a ground-glass and granular appearance. Biopsy showed non-caveating epithelioid cell granulomas related to silicone. She was diagnosed with silicone implant associated ASIA. The authors report on the longterm follow up of these lesions for 15 years.

Silicone disease can affect loco regional and distant anatomic sites, including the lungs. In our Los Angeles plastic surgery practice, we have seen distant and regional silicone disease in patients with silicone breast implants. These complications can affect quality of life; and in cases such as this - lung function.

If you have new or old breast implants, especially if you suspect implant rupture; you should seek consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a specialist in breast implant management and surgery in Los Angeles.
