Labia minora reduction and clitoral hood reduction are two common procedures that are performed for both cosmetic improvement and enhancement of lifestyle; including sexual function. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed by researchers to assess improvements in sexual function after these procedures. Studies using validated instruments of characterization including (Female Genital Self-Image Scale, Sexual Function Questionnaire-28, Sexual Quality of Life-Female, BODY-Q) demonstrated gains in genital self-image and sexual well-being. Complications from surgery were uncommon and mostly minor.
The authors highlight that most of the studies were of limited scope, adding “Observational pre-post data suggest that FGCS is associated with moderate short-term improvements in sexual function and genital self-image, but these findings are based on small, uncontrolled studies that are vulnerable to regression to the mean, expectancy effects, and natural recovery.'
