This case report describes a 23 year old female with a history of sub pectoral (under-the-muscle) breast implant who developed a breast infection following nipple piercings. The onset of the infection began with rapid progressive unilateral breast pain, erythema, and purulent discharge. On ultrasound, there appeared to be a multiloculated abscess. Pathology grew out streptococcus progenies, while the implant pockets were sterile.
The surgeons recommended and performed implant removal and drainage of the abscess followed by antibiotic therapy. Literature review documents four published cases of breast implant or chest infections associated with nipple piercings. The authors recommend counseling of risks in patients seeking nipple piercing following breast augmentation.
