- Sun damage and skin blemishes
- Age spots and sunspots
- Freckles and melasma
- Birthmarks

Intense Pulsed Light treatments at Kare Plastic Surgery, also known as IPL photofacials, use a thermal light energy that minimizes skin discoloration associated with chronic sun damage and age spots on the face and/or chest. Treatment of Actinic Keratosis Pre-Cancerous Sunspots in Santa Monica
Actinic keratosis is a common precancerous skin condition caused by long term exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. These rough, scaly patches, often referred to as sunspots or solar keratoses, typically appear on sun exposed areas such as the face, scalp, chest, shoulders, and back. Actinic keratoses develop when ultraviolet radiation damages skin cells over time, leading to abnormal growth of keratinocytes in the outer layer of the skin. While many lesions remain stable, some can progress into squamous cell carcinoma, making early diagnosis and treatment important for long term skin health.
Treatment of actinic keratosis focuses on removing damaged skin cells and preventing progression to skin cancer. Cryotherapy is one of the most common treatments and uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue quickly and effectively. Topical chemotherapy creams such as 5 fluorouracil, commonly known as 5FU, are also widely used to treat multiple lesions by selectively targeting precancerous cells across a broader area of sun damaged skin. For thicker or resistant lesions, laser ablation can precisely remove abnormal tissue while promoting healthy skin regeneration.
Board Certified Dermatology in Santa Monica for Pre-Cancerous Skin
Our Board certified dermatologist may also recommend advanced light based therapies to improve widespread sun damage. Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, and BroadBand Light, or BBL, treatments can reduce sunspots, redness, and uneven pigmentation on the chest and back while improving overall skin tone and texture. Early treatment of actinic keratosis helps restore healthier skin and reduces the risk of future skin cancer.
