Treatment of Chest Keloids in Los Angeles
The treatment of keloid scars on the chest begins with a careful examination of the scar to determine whether there is hypertrophic scarring or keloid formation. Many atraumatic scars that form on the chest are caused by early inflammation from a cystic pimple or ingrown hair that develops into a progressive keloid.
Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian at Kare Plastic Surgery in Santa Monica has treated thousands of chest keloids and understands the complexities of scar formation on the chest. His vision for scar treatments allows him to treat recalcitrant and stubborn keloids and hypertrophic scars so that they become less visible to the eye.
Acne keloids are often frustrating to treat but fortunately they respond to intralesional injections, laser therapy, and surgery. Our goal is to minimize the role of surgery and the treatment of hypertrophic and keloid scars on the chest. We also strive to avoid radiation therapy in order to minimize the consequences of radiation-induced skin damage,
Dr. Karamanoukian begins your evaluation by examining your keloid or hypertrophic scar and determining the level of inflammation within the skin lesion. If there is a significant amount of inflammation, he will likely recommend a combination protocol that involves lasers and intralesional injections. The typical scar response is several weeks and patients note significant improvement in a short period of time.

The timing of treatment for chest keloids arising from acne is quite controversial when there is active acne present on the skin. Many patients who undergo treatment for acne keloids often have a residual acne. Patient who are on Accutane may benefit from acne scar treatments, including keloid, acne scar treatments, after cessation of their acne treatment. In this critical study the safety of energy based treatments, including RF micro needling, VB, post laser and ablative fractional laser are discussed. It seems plausible, based on the data provided in this journal club article, that simultaneous or back to back, use of energy based treatments is appropriate after Accutane is completed. This challenges the long-held assertion that patients have to wait six months after Accutane is complete in order to treat acne scars.
