Labiaplasty Surgery in Los Angeles

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that is designed to contour the labia minora in women. The procedure can be performed for both medical and cosmetic purposes in order to reduce the size and volume of protruding skin and soft tissue along the outer rim of the vulva.

Who is a good candidate for a labiaplasty?

Deciding on whether you are a good candidate for a labiaplasty begins with a careful examination by a board-certified plastic surgeon who is familiar with labia contouring. Removing redundant labia minora can help you regain your confidence during intimacy, balance the proportions of the labia majora and labia minora, and reduce swelling and discomfort associated with strenuous activity.

Women who choose to undergo a labiaplasty may be embarrassed by the size and protuberance of the labia minorah as it relates to the female genitalia. The labia minora has many forms and there is no absolute normal contour for women. Our board-certified plastic surgeon will carefully detail the amount of redundant labia minora tissue to be removed so that you can regain your confidence in your body.

Can anyone have excessive labia minora tissue?

Overgrowth of the labia minora may occur during pregnancy or normal adult development. We have seen patients in their teens who have asymmetric overgrowth of the labia minora, which makes them excellent candidates for a labiaplasty. The procedure can be performed alone or in combination with a clitoral hood reduction, hymenoplasty, vaginal repair, or vaginal tightening procedure. If you have noticed a gradual overgrowth of the labia minora after pregnancy, it is usually advisable to wait several months after delivery so that the redundant tissue can repair itself and retract. If there is remaining redundancy in the labia minora, this may make you an excellent candidate for labial reduction.

Most labiaplasty procedures are performed in an outpatient setting outside of a hospital. Local anesthesia or general anesthesia is recommended for the procedure which takes less than one hour to perform. The goal of a labiaplasty procedure is to remove redundancy of the labia minora, and to tuck the labial tissue within the folds of the labia majora.  Most patients will recover within several weeks and resume normal activities after that period of time.

Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a double board-certified plastic surgeon who is an expert in labiaplasty procedures and labial contouring. He has written extensively about clitoral hood reduction and labia majora reconstruction, and works closely with gynecologists  who can also repair vaginal tissue that has been damaged during childbirth. His expertise in scar management and corrective plastic surgery makes him an ideal surgeon for a labiaplasty procedure. Dr. Karamanoukian has meticulous surgical expertise which allows him to create contour the labial tissue so that it can blend in with the normal skin.

Patients who have had previous labiaplasty procedures and require correction may also be candidates for a corrective labiaplasty. Revising an old labiaplasty is more complex as it may require tissue grafting to replace over-resected labia minora tissue.
