Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid, the substance that makes up most modern lip fillers. When injected directly into the lip filler, it deconstructs the filler molecules within 24 to 48 hours and the body naturally reabsorbs them. The lips return close to their original state within 1 to 2 weeks. Some severely overfilled lips need more than one treatment session to dissolve all the accumulated filler, especially when multiple syringes have been placed over time. Hyaluronidase works only on HA filler and cannot dissolve Sculptra, Radiesse, silicone, PMMA, or any other non-HA material.

Surgical Lip Reduction
When duck lips are caused by permanent injectable materials, silicone, or simply an excess of natural lip tissue, surgery is the only path to a lasting result. Dr. Karamanoukian removes excess lip volume through a precisely placed incision along the inner vermilion-mucosal border, excises the excess wet mucosa and lip tissue, and closes with fine absorbable sutures. The scar falls entirely inside the natural lip line and is not visible. The result shown in the three-panel photography above is a natural, proportionate lip at 3 months that shows no evidence of prior surgery.
